2023 Beneficiaries

Proceeds from MITT in 2023 will benefit the Livingston Sunrise Rotary Foundation donated to two local non-profit which include the Connection Youth Services and Livingston County Habitat for Humanity

The Connection Youth House (Livingston Family Center Inc.) Livingston Family Center, Inc. was established in 1996 by Janet Loesche, LMSW. The agencybegan with two therapists as an outpatient mental health therapy office in Pinckney and served approximately 60 clients per year. The agency was established to provide quality therapy services to un-insured and under-insured individuals on a sliding fee scale. To date, the outpatient office services over 400 individuals per year and contracts with ten therapists to provide mental health treatment to children, adolescents, adults, and families.

In March of 2000, in response to the increased need for a safe place for runaway and homeless youth in Livingston County, The Connection Youth Services (TCYS) was established. TCYS consists of three programs, Emergency Shelter, Transitional Living, and Street Outreach that strive to build positive relationships between youth, their families, and their community by providing essential services to ensure youth are safe, healthy, and have a permanent place to live. TCYS began with three part-time staff and one family host home to shelter youth when they hadnowhere else to go. Today, TCYS operates out of three buildings, a six-bed emergency shelter, a Drop-In Center, and two scattered-site apartments. TCYS serves over 100 runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth and families every year.

In 2009, Livingston Family Center opened The Family Connection Center (TFCC) as a result of collaboration with the 44th Circuit Court-Family Division and LACASA in response to an increased need for safe visitation between perpetrators of domestic abuse and their children. To date, TFCC serves an average of 25 families per year at the center.

Livingston County Habitat for Humanity

2022 marks the 30th Anniversary for the Livingston County Habitat for Humanity. Throughout the 30 years the organization has built 19 homes and provided hundreds of home repairs. They currently have 2 homes under construction with one to be completed in the next couple of months, if not sooner. Habitats staff consists of 8 full time employees and 50 regular volunteers plus approximately 100 additional volunteers. 80% of the home building, home repairs and ReStore work is completed by volunteers.

In 2019 Habitat for Humanity saw a great need for safety repairs to homes that the families already owned, now known as their A Brush With Kindness program. In 2019 the majority of the repairs were safety grab bars for senior citizens and individuals in need of assistance getting safely in and out the restroom and their home. Since 2019 the program has more than quadrupled, receiving 10-20 applications a month compared to the 8-10 applications a year. The projects and requests range from the safety grab bar installations to roof repairs, furnace replacements, mold remediation, insulation installation, floor repairs, windows and much more. In the winter months the biggest need is heat. In the winter season of 2021 / 2022 Habitat replaced 6 furnaces. Since October of the 2022 / 2023 winter season Habitat has replaced 1 furnace, currently has 5 requests and anticipates several more in the upcoming months.

Partner families receiving assistance are in the 80% or less AMI bracket, have a payback requirement and a sweat equity requirement if they are physically able. The payback requirement is based on the percentage of the families AMI and their income. If a family is in the 10% AMI bracket, they only pay back 10% of Habitat for Humanity’s expenses and the payment is based on an amount they can afford.

Partner families must own their home and they must agree that the home is in need of repair for them to live safely in it for at least 5 additional years. Habitat does not repair homes for families to sell, but to ensure families can safely live and age in their home. The majority of repairs that Habitat assists with are repairs that the families would not be able to afford on their own, therefore their homes would continue to fall into disrepair and eventually become unlivable.
